Double degree for Accounting and Actuarial Professional Accreditation
BCom – Accounting with BCom – Actuarial Studies
The double degree BCom – Accounting with BCom – Actuarial Studies will be particularly appealing to students who are planning to gain professional accreditation in the areas of accounting and actuarial studies.
Prospective Macquarie students will be able to apply through the Universities Admission Centre or the Macquarie International Office.
Application has been made to CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) for accreditation of this double degree. Credit or higher grades in the appropriate units will qualify students for exemptions from Institute of Actuaries of Australia (IAAust) examinations in the same way as for other Macquarie actuarial degrees.
Two-Year Degree Program in Actuarial Studies for Graduates
A graduate with an undergraduate degree may be able to complete a BCom (Actuarial Studies) degree in two years rather than the normal three years. For this to be possible, the undergraduate degree must
- be from an approved Australian or overseas tertiary institution,
- have high level grades, and
- have either
- a major in mathematical statistics, or
- a major in economics or commerce and also include a full-year unit or two semester units in mainstream first year university mathematics and a semester unit in statistics with a mathematical emphasis.
Students in this two year program may be able to obtain exemption from Part I of the professional examinations. The degree may be extended a further year giving the possibility of exemption from Part II of these examinations.
Australian applicants for this program should apply through the Universities Admission Centre and indicate BCom (Actuarial Studies) as their preference. Applicants will have their whole academic record taken into account. Overseas applicants should apply to the International Office at Macquarie University.
The offer of a place in this program does not guarantee that you have the possibility of completing the program within 2 years. This will depend on the units included in your previous tertiary studies. Prospective students who are in doubt about their eligibility should send details of their previous studies to the Department of Actuarial Studies.
Advanced Standing
A graduate with an undergraduate degree from an approved Australian or overseas tertiary institution is eligible for "advanced standing" towards an undergraduate degree at Macquarie. Such graduates may be granted up to a maximum of 28 credit points, (including at most 10 credit points at 200 level) which may be counted towards the requirements of their Macquarie degree. (See Credit for Previous Studies (CPS) (Advanced Standing) in the Macquarie University Academic Manual. )
No advanced standing is granted for passes in the exams of the Institute of Actuaries.
