What is non-award study?

A non-award student is someone who has enrolled in one or more undergraduate or postgraduate units but who is not enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program.  Once enrolled, non-award students are indistinguishable from degree students and become subject to the same rules relating to prerequisite studies, work required and credit points, examinations, grades, non-compliance with unit requirements and discontinuation of studies.  For undergraduate students these rules are called the Bachelor Degree Rules and are found in the University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies.  Rules 6-12 are the ones you need to be most familiar with.  Rules for postgraduate students can be found in the Handbook of Postgraduate Studies.

Who is eligible to do non-award study?

To enrol as a non-award student you must either hold Australian citizenship or have permanent resident status.  If you do not fall into either of these categories you should contact the Centre for Open Education to discuss possible eligibility for non-award study.

While students in some visa categories (e.g. provisional spouse visa and other long term temporary visas) might be able to enrol on a non-award basis, they will be limited to enrolment in no more than two units and will not be eligible to articulate to a bachelor degree while they still hold a temporary resident visa. 

University policy does not permit Macquarie students enrolled in a degree program to enrol on a non-award basis in units which are not available to them in their current degree.

What Statistics subjects are available?

Entry to the units STAT170 Introductory Statistics and STAT175 offered by this Department is subject to a minimum UAI of 60.00 for 2007 HSC students
